Phynix is a unique, not‑for‑profit, open‑access test‑and‑teach centre dedicated to accelerating the Dutch energy transition. We bring together teachers, students, researchers, governmental bodies, and industry partners to explore, test, and demonstrate the future of clean energy.

Let's introduce Phynix

Born as the Baseload Power Hub (BLPH) and originally developed by CrossWind for the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm, Phynix is the world’s first hydrogen production platform designed specifically for offshore conditions. Today, the platform has found a new home in the Eemshaven—transformed into a living laboratory for hydrogen and system integration.

The platform includes:

  • A reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination system
  • A 1 MW / 5 MWh lithium-ion battery
  • A 2.5 MW PEM electrolyser, including hydrogen purification
  • Hydrogen storage of approximately 1,200 kg at 30 bar
  • A 1 MW fuel cell
  • Supporting utility systems, including cooling, nitrogen supply, compressed air, and high-voltage switchgear

 

Beyond technology validation, Phynix addresses urgent human capital shortages in the energy sector by providing Hands-on training for students across all educational levels with a string initial focus on technical vocational education and training.

It serves as a realistic testbed where public and private stakeholders can jointly develop knowledge on technology, operations, safety, ecology, and regulation. Phynix and its collective ‘learning by doing’-approach is supported by a broad consortium of industry, academic, and public partners. All knowledge and data generated will be shared with government, industry, and educational and research institutions, helping to enable future offshore green hydrogen deployment at the lowest possible cost.
